Lucy Gray Corset | Butterick B4254

I wanted to make a replica of the corset worn by Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray in the new Hunger Games movie – The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Initially I tried drafting my own pattern but that failed miserably. I then came across a review by LeiaAurora on Pattern Review and they used Butterick B4254 as a base so that’s exactly what I did too.

The first thing I did was trace out the pattern pieces eliminating the parts that extended past the waist line. With my new pattern pieces I cut them out of the duck cotton, purple taffeta and the floral cotton which I would use as a lining. The duck cotton and the fashion fabric were then basted together and then the pieces were assembled according to the instructions. First the duck cotton and fashion fabric layer, and then the cotton lining.

The two layers of fabric were then placed on top of each other and pinned in place around the outside as I began sewing in all of the boning channels. For the boning, I used plastic boning as the pattern uses 12 meters in total.

After all of the bones were sewn in place I added the leather panels to the top layer. I cut them from the same pattern pieces but in 5mm from each of the side seams so the purple layer would be visible in the seams. I then spent 8 hours hand painting the flower and snake design on using thin layers of acrylic paint.

When the paint was all dry, I trimmed back the corset shoulder straps a little and lowered the part where the straps met the top of the corset. I then made some bias tape from the purple taffeta which I finished the outside edges of the corset with.

After that, it was a matter of adding the eyelets in the front and back and it was done!

Time : 3 days. Most of that taken up by making a bad self-drafted pattern first and hand painting.
