I mean, I started the year off on track with what I’d planned to make…. The first costume I finished was even one from the plans list – Durmstrang dress robes! I got as far as making Katniss, Wednesday Flynn and Rapunzel and that’s when the Barbie movie came out and everything else went out the window. It’s not very often a new movie comes out that causes me to want to make everything immediately. Last time that happened was with Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. Maybe I just have a thing for Margot Robbie outfits?
Anyway~ I did at least manage to make a Padme, even if it wasn’t the one I had initially planned for.
Durmstrang Dress Robes | Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
First full costume of the year. If you remember from last years planning post, I was hoping to have this made for Christmas the year before but uh, that didn’t happen! Instead I got it done in time for Valentine’s Day and took some cute photos together with my Yule Ball Hermione.
Then it travelled all the way across the world with us on our Honeymoon and we took a photo in front of Hogwarts together. It was 36 degrees and Cam almost died but it was worth it…..
Katniss Everdeen – Parde Gown | The Hunger Games : Catching Fire
Originally I made this to take to Dragoncon with me as one of the host hotels was used to shoot some of the Capitol scenes in and I thought it would be really neat to take some photos in the real life location, however, it was one of the first to get axed from the luggage when I very quickly realized I had run out of room. The reason? Well, it was meant to have an accompanying Peeta but I just never got round to making that so out it went and I didn’t fancy myself walking that parade in those heels. I’d prefer to rollerblade it with barely any practice but more about that later.
Rapunzel | Tangled
Rapunzel is one of my top 3 Disney Princesses and ever since I learnt of the Tangled lantern photo op at Disney World in 2019, I knew next time I went back I would HAVE to make Rapunzel + Flynn for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party so I could go in costume and take the photo. And that’s exactly what I did.
We also got to meet Rapunzel in costume as well and it was such a precious moment. She’s beyond cute and loved that I had sewn my own dress just like she had!

Wednesday + Enid – Rave’N | Wednesday
I started watching Wednesday at the beginning of the year, got to the Rave’N episode and decided I immediately needed Wednesday’s black dress.
While I was waiting for the fabric I ordered for Wednesday to arrive, I made Enid’s dress as I was able to source all her fabrics locally.
I love how my Wednesday dress turned out and I wore it three times this year but after preforming as her in a Halloween cabaret, she’s looking a little worse for wear. I would like to remake her from 100% silk instead of the polyester organza I used which made it horribly itchy.
Margaery Tyrell – Purple Wedding Gown | Game of Thrones
Jack Gleeson was announced as a guest two weeks out from the Winter Armageddon expo. I took that as a challenge upon myself to see if I could once again recreate my purple wedding dress Margery so I could meet him while wearing it. I did, but boy was it a stressful two weeks.

Barbie – Perfect Day | Barbie Movie
At this point the Barbie Movie had come out and any other plans I had for the rest of the year went out the window. All of her’s (and Ken’s) outfits were so much fun that I immediately started recreating them.
I started with the 50s inspired pink pleated “perfect day” dress because it really spoke to my vintage fashion loving heart.
Fun fact : My local fabric stores didn’t have any large sized pink gingham in stock so this is actually made from a bedsheet!
Padme – Retrofied | Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace
Look, I had big ol grand plans for what I wanted to take to America on my Honeymoon with me but only a teeny tiny suitcase. This was meant to worn at Galaxy’s Edge so I could meet Darth Vader in it but unfortunately it was one of the first things to get axed when I realized I had wayyyyyy too much in my suitcase.
I’d like to remake this again one day but from the leftover fabrics from my Red Throne Room Gown.

Barbie + Ken – Rollerblades | Barbie Movie
Here is where I realized I wasn’t going to take Katniss anymore which is what I had originally planned to wear walking in the Dragoncon parade so I thought it would be really neat to rollerblade in the parade as Barbie and Ken!
I hadn’t rollerbladed since the early 2000s and was surprised at how quickly I picked it back up again.
Needless to say, one of us was a bit more confident in rollerblades than the other…
Ken – Beach Off | Barbie Movie
Okay, first let’s acknowledge the elephant in the room, this wig is AWFUL but it’s all that Wig is Fashion had in the way of short blonde wigs before we left for Dragoncon. They didn’t release the actual Barbie and Ken ones until the week before we flew out.
Anyway ~ made this so Cam would also have a comfy Ken to wear in the Atlanta heat.
Fun Fact : I recreated the fabric myself in photoshop and got it printed by Spoonflower!

Flynn Rider | Tangled
The last costume I made before Cam and I flew to the States. Obviously this was to match the Rapunzel I made earlier in the year for the lantern photo.
I tried to make everything from natural fabrics so that Cam could breathe in the Florida heat. He lasted just long enough for the photos and that’s all that mattered.
I finished this the day before we left.
Jareth – Masquerade | Labyrinth
The first costume I made after coming back from our Honeymoon. I finished everything but the coat the year before and then decided that I would enter my Sarah in the Bernina Fashion Awards and she would obviously need a Jareth to match right?
This coat fabric was/is literally the worst fabric I’ve ever worked with.
Padme Amidala – Red Invasion Gown | Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace
Originally for Spring Geddon I was going to make picnic Padme, but earlier in the year Armageddon announced a new cosplay competition that would consist of previous Best in Show winners and I told myself that if I got accepted that I would finally tackle one of my dream costumes for it.
Well, I got accepted!
Overall I was happy with it, though I do want to swap out the “eggs” at the bottom because I HATED how mine turned out.
Felt real good smashing out one of my top 4 all time dream costumes though.
Ken – I am Kenough | Barbie Movie
I made one of these earlier in the year for Cameron after he saw the movie with me and said he wanted one. The next day at Spotlight I came across an almost identical fabric to the one used in the film.
Barbie – Beach | Barbie Movie
I hosted a summer cosplay picnic and wanted to wear a nice summery costume so decided to make another of the Barbie outfits. This one in particular because of the big ol hat and because I had some of the bedsheet fabric left.
Lucy Gray Baird | A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
I saw the movie in November and instantly fell in love with it. I enjoyed it even more than the original Hunger Games films. So naturally, I decided to attempt to make it.
Originally this was going to be my first project for 2024 but I had some spare time at the end of December…
Let me know which was your favourite! I think mine had to be Rapunzel because she’s cute and so comfy to wear!
